Description / Background

The memorial is a small decorative white marble tablet, on a black marble backing. It is mounted on a side wall of the Mudgee Uniting Church (formerly the Methodist Church) positioned between two stained glass windows. The memorial is dedicated to Private Lyndsay Carlton Winter Pyne who was killed in action on 20 October 1917 during the First World War. The memorial has an ornately carved top piece featuring floral embellishments, with a crossed, hand-painted Union Jack and Australian flag, entwined with leaves and a large capital 'P' in the centre above the flags. The inscription on the tablet is engraved and blackened.

The tablet was designed by Mr D B Acton, monumental mason, of Church Street, Mudgee. Mr Acton also designed and installed the Mudgee Methodist Church First World War Honour Roll also in the church (Mudgee Guardian and North Western Representative, 29 August 1918).

A memorial service for Private Pyne was held at the church on 30 December 1917. The service was conducted by Reverend W W Danks and largely attended by Pyne's relatives and friends. The tablet was erected in the church the following August and was unveiled by Mr Henry Macourt on 15 September 1918 at a dedication service conducted by Reverend Danks (Mudgee Guardian and North Western Representative, 3 January and 16 September 1918).

Lindsay Pyne was a single farmer at Eurunderee, near Mudgee, when he enlisted on 8 August 1916 as a Private in the AIF. His 54th Battalion sailed from Sydney on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 25 October 1916. He was killed in action at Ypres on 20 October 1917 and his name appears on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 29), Belgium.

The memorial tablet is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
