Description / Background

This war memorial is dedicated to the men and women from Goulburn and district who served on Australian ships and shore defences. The dedication is inscribed on a bronze plaque, which is mounted on a low plinth. Flanking the plinth are two ship cannon shells from the battle cruisers HMAS Australia and HMNZS New Zealand.

The shell is 12inch HE (high explosive) and weighs approximately 280kgs. The 12 inch penetrators are stubbier and weigh 380kg. Nearly all the markings on the shell were for accounting purposes used by the Ordnance Depot (in this case, Spectacle Island). They are batch numbers, date of manufacture, and recording the assignment to a ship. There is no known record to decipher the numbers further. The arrow indicates they were owned by HM Govt and were an Admiralty approved pattern.
