Description / Background

This war memorial is a paper honour roll for members of the Wyrallah Public School community who served in the First World War. The page is presented in a dark timber frame and includes a small re-dedication plaque on the lower edge.

The roll is ornately illustrated with flora, cupids, marching soldiers, and decorative scrolls. There are also two officers standing at ease at the bottom of the page. They stand on platforms, which are supported by swans. Swans can have various meanings and could represent peace, power, hope, promise, or elegance.

This memorial is a replica of the original roll, which was first designed and executed by Mr Moffitt (Moffatt) of Lismore Superior Public School in 1916. It was unveiled at Wyrallah's annual school picnic on 27 May that year. In reporting on the event, the Northern Star,10 June, printed the names of the 55 men who were on the roll at the time, noting three had already died. Of the roll itself the article said:

The feature of the gathering was the unveiling of the very neat and tasteful roll of honor, which was completed for the occasion, and was the design and work of Mr. Moffit, of Lismore Superior Public School, and reflected the greatest credit on his skill and artistic taste.

At the picnic, Councillor W. H. Hoskin presided and gave short address. Following speeches and songs, Mrs Clifton, wife of a teacher at the school, drew aside the Commonwealth flag and dedicated the roll. A new Union Jack was also presented to the children by the Parents and Citizens' Association.

On 5 February 1917, the Star mentioned the roll again and by that stage it contained "the names of 73 ex-pupils of the school who have enlisted for the front, and of that number five was marked as having given the supreme sacrifice."

In the 1950s, the roll went missing. Fortunately, a post card had been made of it at some stage. In 2008, this replica was produced by Barbara Briers using the image in the post card. Funding was secured for the project by former student Fred Hoskin, who applied for a grant from the Department of Public Affairs. He also crafted the timber frame to house the roll.

The replica was re-dedicated by Ms Janelle Saffin M.P. on 6 November 2008. A detailed report of the occasion was published in the Lismore Echo on 19 November.

Access to the memorial is restricted as it is within school grounds. Also on site is the Wyrallah Public School Second World War Memorial Archway.
