Durrumbul Public School First World War and Second World War Honour Rolls Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background These two timber honour rolls are hung in a classroom at Durrumbul Public School. The first is for those who served in the First World War. It was unveiled on 24 May 1918. The second honour roll is for ex-pupils from the school who served in the Second World War. The first roll is typical of the memorials created by furniture makers Brown and Jolly of Lismore. It has a distinctive curved pediment at the top, with painted symbols of the crossed English and Australian flags; the Australian government emblem, and other illustrations including flora. The second timber honour roll is a simply designed carved timber memorial with columns on each side of the names, which are printed in gold lettering. The unveiling ceremony for the First World War roll was held at the school on Empire Day, 24 May 1918. The ceremony was presided over by the Chairman Mr W. R. Baker, and included speeches from Mr W. E. Selwood, Mayor of Mullumbimby, ministers of religion, and the teacher, Mr Johnson. The unveiling was performed by the mothers of the soldiers (The Northern Star, Lismore, 31 May 1918). The honour rolls are available for viewing during school opening hours.
