Description / Background

The Dunedoo War Memorial Swimming Pool is a facility located on the corner of Wallaroo and Cobborah Street and includes an full length swimming pool outside (not shown) and an L shaped brick building which is believed to serve as an office area and changing rooms. The facility opened in 1964 to remembrance of the men and women from the area who died as a result of war service.

The swimming pool building has a red painted roller door which serves as the front entrance. The words “DUNEDOO WAR MEMORIAL SWIMMING POOL” is located above the doorway in large letters attached to the brick. The corner of the building on the left-hand side of the roller door features a series of circular shaped voided cross brick patterns. There are several red and blue coloured fish painted around the sides of the building. The rear side of the building (facing the street) features two large painted murals. These depict a red octopus surrounded by echidnas, snakes and handprints on one mural and a bumblebee and yellow flowers on the other.

There are three plaques attached to the inner wall of the building which provides details of the initial unveiling by Major General D Macarthur-Onslow CBE, DSO, ED on the 2nd November 1963 and the official opening by the Honourable P. N. Ryan MLA, Minister of Public Works on the 31st October 1964. The third plaque is a dedication which reads “In remembrance of those who during war made the great sacrifice. O God make us better men and women and give us peace in our time”.
