John was submitted to hospital on 9 June 1916. He returned to Australia, departing 5 July 1916 aboard the HS Karoola. He arrived in Sydney on 2 August 1916 and was discharged on 20 October 1916. John then rejoined the war at Parkes on 30 December 1916 with service number 51858, but was discharged again as medically unfit on 5 January 1917. 

He was awarded the British War Medal (#40159).

John is the elder brother of Arthur Samuel Beileiter and Charles Lyons Beileiter. They are cousins to the brothers Arthur Ernest Beileiter and Charles Edward Beileiter.

In total, five members of the Beileiter family served in the First World War.
