Description / Background

These memorial gates are located at the Douglas Street entrance to The Armidale School (T.A.S.). They include a small, single gate for pedestrians and a larger, double-gate for vehicles. The gates are made from iron and feature the letters 'T.A.S.' in the metalwork. They are hung on large brick pillars, which frame the driveway. On the pillar on the southern side of the driveway is a metal honour roll, commemorating students and teachers from the school who were killed in action during the First World War.

The gates were designed/made by F.G. Castleden of Newcastle, NSW. They were dedicated by Armidale's Anglican Bishop Moyes on 30 January 1936. The Armidale Express, 31 January 1936, described the gates and dedication ceremony in detail, and listed the names of those inscribed. The roll may have been repositioned on the pillar since this time.

Inscription

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them"
