Description / Background

The memorial is an avenue of trees planted in Isabella Street, Queanbeyan, outside the Queanbeyan Public School. The memorial commemorates 28 ex-students of the the school who were killed in the First World War.

As described by local historian Brendan O' Keefe, the avenue was first planted in 1936, replacing a memorial on the grounds of the school that was removed to allow for new buildings. The street planting fell into disrepair and was replanted by Queanbeyan City Council on 23 April 2015.

A plaque commemorating the replanting is located on a gatepost of the Queanbeyan Public School.

Thanks to Tim Geyer of Queanbeyan City Council for the images.

Avenue of Memory

The Avenue of Memory, the brainchild of Principal Frank Gallagher and his wife Georgette, was planted along Isabella St in 1936 by students of Queanbeyan Public School to commemorate former students who fought and died as a result of WW1.  An additional tree was planted for Mr James Ridley, long serving Principal at the time these young men were students.

The Avenue was replanted  in April 2015 on the Centenary of the landing at Gallipoli, and acknowledges those 28 former pupils, Principal Ridley and Mr and Mrs Gallagher.
