Description / Background

Two carved and polished wooden honour rolls for the First and Second World Wars. The names of those who served from the Borenore district are printed in gilt in two columns on each roll.

The First World War roll was unveiled at a commemoration service at the Borenore Railway station on 26 April 1921. It was unveiled by local doctor Sir Neville Howse VC, who was twice the Mayor of Orange, and later the member for Calare 1922-1929. Sir Neville was an army medical officer and became the first recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC) serving in the Australian armed forces. He displayed heroic actions in saving a trumpeter in July 1900 during the second Boer War.

The Second World War roll was unveiled in a similar service in the Country Women’s Association (CWA) Hall on 19 April 1952. At the same time, the First World War roll was moved from the railway station. The Borenore community hold an Anzac memorial service at the CWA hall each year, usually commencing at 1:00 pm, followed by a BBQ.
