Byron Bay War Memorial Gates and Memorial Park Sports Fields

Description

The Memorial Gates create a formal entrance to the sports field. Four brick columns support black marble tablets which hold the names of the local men who fell in both World Wars. Three copper arches have the following wording - World War 1 In Remembrance; World War 2 In Remebrance; Korea Malaya Borneo Vietnam Other Conflicts In Remebrance. Iron gates provide access to the park lands. The current memorial replaced original wooden gates erected in 1919 which had an overhead section listing the names of the fallen from WW1.

Please note - the Southern Cross University holds a well preserved photograph of some of the veterans commemorated on this memorial. If you have a family relation to any of the listed men, please contact the Register so that you might be put in touch with the records officer.

Inscription

19 names from WW1 and 23 names from WW2 on black marble tablets.
