The Memorial Gates create a formal entrance to the Byron Bay Recreation Grounds, originally dedicated as a Memorial Park. Four brick columns support black marble tablets inscribed with an honour roll. There are 19 names of those who fell from the First World War and 23 names from the Second World War. Three copper arches link the columns, and bear the dedications. Iron gates provide access to the grounds.
These gates replaced the original wooden gates unveiled with the Memorial Park on 11 November 1922. The original gates had an overhead section listing the names of the fallen from the First World War.
Note: Southern Cross University holds a well preserved photograph of some of the veterans commemorated on this memorial. If you have a family relation to any of the listed men, please contact the NSW War Memorials Register to be put in touch with the University's records officer.
