Description / Background

The bow section is set into the sea wall on Olympic Drive at Milsons Point in Sydney. The plaques are immediately behind the bow. This memorial commemorates the sinking of the German raider "Emden" on 9 November 1914.

Plaque 1

Bow of the original H.M.A.S. Sydney presented by the Royal Australian Historical Society to the Municipality of North Sydney to commemorate the sinking on the 9th November, 1914 of the German raider "Emden" by H.M.A.S. Sydney.

Plaque 2

This famous relic, which was erected here by the North Sydney Municipal Council was unveiled by the Hon. N.J.O. Makin, M.P, Minister for the NAVY, on 9th November 1941
