Description / Background

This war memorial is a decorative marble honour roll for the First World War. It is illustrated with a coloured Australian Red Ensign and the Union Jack. The roll lists the names of 18 men from the Koloona community who served in the war, including three who were killed.

The roll was constructed by M.W. Hardy of Narrabri. It includes symbolism associated with the Masonic Order, which often features in his pieces. Mr C. Kent Snr. erected the roll in the Koloona Public Hall and provided the woodwork for the backing.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the hall on 27 September 1919. It was described in detail in the Warialda Standard and Northern Districts' Advertiser on 6 October. Mr G.A. Codrington was chairman and speakers included Mr W. Capel, the Shire president. The unveiling was performed by Miss Cousie O'Brien, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. O'Brien.

The memorial has been relocated from the village of Koloona to the foyer of the Warialda Soldiers' Memorial Hall, where various commemorative services are held throughout the year.
