Description / Background

A large column constructed of sandstone blocks to form a cenotaph and decorated with a laurel wreath and gilt name plate.  The memorial is dedicated to the Punchbowl soldiers who fought in the Great War, 1914-1918. It is located in the centre of the road in a memorial garden. The memorial was relocated from a site closer to Punchbowl Railway Station.

Additional information by Sydney Trains:

The cenotaph was originally unveilled in 1919 at a site on the corner of Punchbowl Road and The Boulevarde, next to the railway overbridge. By the 1960s, the volume of road traffic necessitated a bridge widening. By agreement with the Punchbowl RSL, the cenotaph was relocated to the wide centre island in The Broadway in October - November 1979, where it stands today.

Inscription

To the Punchbowl Soldiers who fought in the Great War 1914 - 1919. Their fellow citizens raised this token of appreciation.
