Description / Background

Three embroidered panels listing the names of staff and students who enlisted whilst attending the Sydney Training (Teachers) College during the First World War. It is framed behind glass.

The roll was designed by Mr John Christie Wright, a lecturer in art at the College. By the war’s end it comprised three linen panels on which the names of military volunteers were embroidered in dark blue silk (the College colour) with a pair of wreaths at the top of each panel and the College coat of arms at the foot. The embroidered names were created by female students and staff in the art department. Sadly Mr Wright, who enlisted in 1915, was killed in action in 1917 and never saw the result of his initiative.

The linen panels were framed behind glass for the unveiling in 1921 by the Minister for Agriculture. The roll was hung in the College library. It was relocated to the foyer of the Sydney Teachers College building within the University of Sydney where it hung for 30 years in direct sunlight. It has since been removed due to renovation and is now in museum storage.
