Description / Background

A light-coloured, battered wooden cross with a brief inscription carved into it, mounted on a dark polished wooden board. At its base is a small brass plaque with the history of the cross inscribed.

Inscription

On the cross:

To the memory of the Officers, NCO & Men of the 51st Battn AIF who fell in the counter attack on Villers Brettoneux 24-25/4/18.

Brass plaque:

The original cross of which this cross is a replica, was erected on the battlefield of Villers Brettoneux, France, in 1918 and dedicated in St Anne's Church Ryde on Armistice Day, 1934, to the members of the 51st Battalion A.I.F., who made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War 1914-1918. Because the 51st Battalion was largely a West Australian Unit, the original cross was transferred to St George's Cathedral Perth, in 1956, by mutual agreement between the parishioners of the church and the 51st Battalion A.I.F. Association.
