Description / Background

An honour roll inscribed over four slabs of marble, set within the lych gate at the entrance to St Matthew's Anglican Church, Wingham. The gate was built with the purpose of housing the rolls. They detail 139 names of town and district soldiers.

On 19 September 1919, Mrs Machin, honorary treasurer and Reverend H. Kitley of the Church of England, Parish of Wingham, advertised for the public to contribute to the honour roll to be erected at the gateway of the church. A month later, the Parochial Council and Women's Guild of the Church of England decided to establish a lych gate with attached marble rolls for the whole parish. The design and plans for the whole construction to be worked out by James Chambers of Killabah sawmills. The cost of the work to be met by donations.

The unveiling took place on Wednesday 12 November 1919. The Wingham Chronicle, 14 November 1919 described the lych gate and the ceremony undertaken by the Lord Bishop of Newcastle.
