Description / Background

The Beechwood District Church First World War Honour Roll is a framed parchment. The names are printed down the centre of the page and are enclosed by a Norman-shaped arch, made of pieces of brown paper. The whole is presented in a decorative timber frame.

There are 24 names printed on the roll in neat block letters. They are not in alphabetical order, suggesting the memorial was constructed during the war, rather than after it.

The roll does not include any identification, such as a location or date. However, it does include the phrase 'Brethren pray for us', which was spoken by Paul in the King James Bible in the Text 1 Thessalonians 5.25. This indicates the memorial has a religious connection.

Details from the veteran's military records also assist in identifying the roll. They show the soldiers were of Presbyterian or Methodist religion and most gave their home address as Beechwood or Hastings River, NSW. Beechwood was a settlement west of Wauchope, NSW, and there was a Beechwood Methodist Church. It is possible the roll originated there.

The roll is now in storage at the Wauchope Historical Society Museum and access to it is restricted.
