Description / Background

An ornate timber roll of honor featuring handsome carved decorations including a wreath, a shroud and flora. The names are painted in gold in the middle of the board in three columns.

The roll was unveiled in the Gladstone Literary Institute, also known as the Gladstone Hall, on Thursday 24 May 1917. A number of church clergymen attended including Reverend C.J. Chambers, Reverend David Smith, Reverend Father Fitzpatrick and Reverend Waterhouse. Miss M. Barnett drew the flag aside at the ceremony. Mr Harry Barnett was chairman and Mr V.T. Thorne stated further names were to be added including Privates McKay, G. Rowe, Gus. Ryan and Morton.

The following Wednesday The Macleay Chronicle described the unveiling in detail and listed the names on the roll at the time. Other names were also added later, notably those on the right hand side.

Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening times of the centre.
