Description / Background

This war memorial is an honour roll for the Second World War. It is a simple rectangle of dark timber, with no decorative elements.

In the centre of the board are the names of 21 people from the Jeogla community who served in the war. Their names are printed in gold, with all but the last one in alphabetical order. Each name has a coloured circle next to it, indicating their branch of service. All the branches are listed as acronyms at the top of the board, with their corresponding coloured circle, acting as a key. They are:

  • A.I.F. - Australian Imperial Force
  • A.M.F. - Australian Military Forces
  • R.A.A.F. - Royal Australian Air Force
  • V.D.C. - Volunteer Defence Corps
  • W.A.A.A.F. - Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force
  • A.W.A.S. - Australian Women's Army Service

The memorial has a humble, handmade appearance, suggesting it may have been constructed by a member of the local community. It is unknown if the memorial was officially unveiled; however, it was formerly located in the Jeogla Hall. The hall was demolished after the Second World War and the timber recycled. It was probably around this time the roll was moved to the Sauer Memorial Hall in Wollomombi, NSW. It is available for viewing when a function is held on site.

Jeogla is a locality to the south of the Wollomombi Village, in the New England Tablelands. The name refers to the Parish of Jeogla, Jeogla Mountain Range, and Jeogla Pastoral Station. In addition to the hall, Jeogla also had a school, which opened in June 1890 closed in April 1968.
