Description / Background

This roll of honor is made of two pieces of polished marble. The roll itself is of white marble, decorated with scroll and floral carvings, some of which are painted in full colour. The flowers include the floral emblems of Australia and NSW. The names of the nine men who fell in the First World War are incised in the middle of the roll and blackened, alongside their battalion numbers and colour badges. The crossed British and Australian flags are carved and painted in full colour above the names and are topped with a gold crown. The roll is mounted to a pink marble panel, approximately 36 inches high by 28 inches wide.

The roll was unveiled at the Kenthurst School of Arts on 30 January 1921 by Reverend W J Roberts. The memorial was paid for by local returned soldiers and cost 40 pounds (Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 4 February 1921).

The School of Arts hall was built in 1889. It is now known as the Kenthurst Literary Institute. Access to the view the roll inside the hall is by appointment/tour.
