Description

The Moree Superior School roll of honour is a large dark timber board, with three panels. The school installed the roll before the end of the First World War. The memorial is located in the school's Assembly Hall.

A brief history

At the Parents and Citizen's Association Meeting held on 10 July 1916, the president "suggested that some tablet should be erected in the school in memory of the lads who had fallen in the war" (Moree Gwydir Examiner, 11 July 1916). In the following month, a member of the Association, Mrs Kempe, suggested residents be asked to pay for one or more names on the board. The motion was accepted and she offered to pay for four names at a cost of one shilling and three pence per name.

That November, a further meeting of the Association was held and it was decided to dedicate the roll on 14 December at the Empire Theatre. Mr Robinson's tender for the lettering of £15 was accepted for 170 names.

The Moree Gwydir Examiner on 21 November 1916 published a list of proposed names for the roll. The list included K for killed and G for Gallipoli, and the Principal Mr Newling asked for the names to be checked for omissions.

The roll was rededicated in March 1921.
