Description / Background

The memorial is a Terrazzo marble honor roll tablet, for those from Nullamanna who served in the First World War. It is ornately decorated with a design of a stone arch, above the interior of a temple. At the top of the arch is a Rising Sun badge, flanked by the Australian and British flags, which are highlighted in full colour. The 'roof' and 'floor' of the temple are decorated with black and white tiles. Supporting the arch are four columns, at the bottom of which are illustrations of a sword, bayonets, an Australian military slouch hat and a laurel wreath. Between the columns, occupying the centre of the tablet, is a scroll inscribed with the list of names.

The roll was made by prominent stonemason M.W. Hardy of Narrabi, NSW. He created a number of war memorials throughout the North West and New England Regions of NSW. His designs often featured symbols linked to various theatres of war and symbols linked to the Masonic Lodge movement.

The unveiling of the roll was advertised in the Inverell Times on 19 November 1918. The event was scheduled for 3.30pm on Saturday, 23 November, to be followed by a picnic. The unveiling took place in the Nullamanna Hall in front of a large crowd. A detailed report was published in the Inverell Times on 26 November 1918. Mr A.C. Fraser presided and said "they had assembled to do honor to residents who had left there and fought for the liberty, not only of themselves, but of the whole world." Mrs Scott performed the unveiling, and it is noteworthy there are two soldiers with the same surname featured on the roll.

In 1937, the hall was destroyed by a cyclone and the roll was placed in storage at the local school. Once the new hall was built in 1938, the roll was moved there.

In November 1939, a public meeting was chaired by Mr N.Crook to discuss funds held in the Savings Bank, which were related to the "old Honour Roll Committee". In order to prevent the money from being deemed "unclaimed", those at the meeting decided to reconvene the committee. Office bearers were elected and the decision was made to undertake repairs to the roll, to fix damage caused by the destruction of the old hall (The Inverell Times, 10 November 1939).

Access to the memorial is by appointment/tour.
