Description / Background

This war memorial is an honour roll for the First World War. It consists of a timber backing board with a "facing plate of stamped and pressed burnished or Florentine bronze" (Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences website). The plate's design includes two laurel boughs, the Union Jack and Australian flags, and two stylised scrolls.

The roll was made by the Wunderlich Company of Sydney. It was unveiled on 21 November 1920, by then-Governor of New South Wales Sir Walter Edward Davidson.

The roll is located in St Stephen's Anglican Church in Newtown. Two fabric flags, the Australian flag and the national flag of the United Kingdom, are draped over the top corners of the board. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the church.
