1924 - The Honor Roll

Planning for the Honor Roll began in July 1915, when the judges of the Supreme Court ordered that 'in grateful recognition of the loyal and devoted service rendered at that supremely critical period to King and Empire by members and prospective members of the legal profession, the names of all barristers, solicitors, students-at-law, articled clerks and certified conveyancers who had already enlisted for active service in the military or naval forces of the Empire, or should do so before the war ended' be officially recorded.

Designed in the Renaissance style by government architect George McRae, the memorial features three different types of marble. The base, panels and top section are white Italian marble; the dedication is inscribed into Cudgegong ivory and gold marble; and the central piece is NSW King Edward grey marble. The bronze plates, which record the names of members of the legal profession who served in World War I, are embellished with the figures of Britannia and Australia, each holding a memorial wreath. The cost of the memorial was financed by fellow members of the legal profession.

The Honor Roll was unveiled on 3 June 1924 by the then Chief Justice of New South Wales, The Hon Sir William Cullen, KCMG, LLD in the vestibule inside the King Street entrance. In 2002 the memorial was re-dedicated in its present position by the Chief Justice of New South Wales, The Hon James Spigelman, following a re-design of the court's public entrance.
