Description / Background

The memorial consists of a large grey stone obelisk, positioned on a platform of three steps, often said to represent the Trinity. The platform is at the centre of a square of paving made of granite. Names of those who served in the First World War and dedications are inscribed on the sides of the memorial with gold lettering. Halfway up the obelisk on two sides are carved wreaths.

Recently, four smaller obelisks made of a similar stone have been added to the memorial, positioned at each corner of the square. They are dedicated to service personnel from the Second World War, Korea, Vietnam and the War on Terrorism. They also have names inscribed in gold lettering. A pair of old cannons was also added. All additions were completed by 26 April 2007.

Notes on veterans' names:

  • The Australian War Memorial records indicate the following soldiers returned to Australia: Sgt B C Marlin, Cpl W McWhirter, Pte R J Mitchell, Pte G S Mitchell, and Gunner J Dunston. As this memorial lists all the above as deceased, their status codes have been given here as killed in action (KIA).
  • The National Archives records:
    • Sgt Marlin's widow notes he died in 1966 of war causes.
    • Cpl McWhirter was wounded in action and discharged medically unfit.
    • Pte G S Mitchell was gassed and discharged medically unfit.
    • Gnr James Dunston is an alias of Edward Richard Fellowes.
