Description / Background

This timber honour roll is in the shape of a shield. It is decorated with a metal wreath and crown, flanked by two stylised poppies. The names are recorded on several metal plates attached to the centre of the shield.

On 24 October 1947, The Armidale Express reported the 'Hillgrove Memorial Shield' was to be be presented to the Hillgrove Rifle Club by the citizens of Hillgrove on Friday 31 October 1947. It bore the names of forty-three men who served in the Second World War, and three men who lost their lives. The shileld was to be open for perpetual competition by members of the Rifle Club. Mrs A. Martin, who lost a son at the war, was the secretary of the movement.

The memorial is located in a glass cabinet in the Hillgrove Uniting Church, formerly Hillgrove Presbyterian.
