102 Australian General Hospital Memorial, Tamworth Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This memorial consists of a large piece of granite, with two plaques attached. It is located inside the front gates of Nazareth House, an accredited care facility conducted by the Sisters of Nazareth. Late in the 1990s, committee members from the Tamworth RSL, Ken Lyttle and Gordon Gaffney, sought to identify the location of the 102 Australian General Hospital in Tamworth. It was located on Manilla Road from Brolga Crescent to the property 'Four Winds'. The monument could not be located on Manilla Road, and Sister Theresa agreed to the memorial being placed within their boundary fence. The monument was constructed by R. F. Gaites and details of the planned unveiling were published in the Northern Daily Leader on 25 October 2001. The monument was dedicated by Father Tom Shanahan and unveiled by the Tamworth Mayor, Warren Woodley on 18 November 2001. Inscription Top plaque During the Second World War the 102 Australian General Hospital was situated in this area. An Army Training Camp was also established continuing from Brolga Crescent, where the guardhouse was sited, along both sides of Manilla Road to the property "Four Winds". Many wounded Australian soldiers were cared for in this facility. This memorial is sponsored by the Ex-Service Organisations of Tamworth.
