Description / Background

This war memorial is an upright bushrock, with a bronze plaque attached to its top face. The plaque bears the dedication to members of the 2/30 Infantry Battalion 8th Division Australian Imperial Force who died during the Second World War or were taken as prisoners of war.

The memorial was established by the 2/30 Battalion A.I.F. Association and dedicated on 25 November 1990. It is accompanied by a small garden bed and a metal flagpole. It is located at the Tamworth Showground, near the office.

Inscription

2/30 Infantry Battalion 8th Division A.I.F.

The 2/30 Battalion A.I.F. was formed at this Tamworth Showground on the 21st November 1940 by commanding officer Lieut. Col. F. G. Galleghan E.D. (later Brigadier Sir Frederick Galleghan D.S.O., O.B.E., E.D., I.S.O.J.

To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the formation of the battalion this plaque was dedicated by the members of the 2/30 Battalion A.I.F. Association on the 25th November 1990 in memory of those who gave their lives in action in Malaya and Singapore, or later while prisoners of the Imperial Japanese Army.
