Description / Background

This unique war memorial is an Australian flag, featuring the names of 14 men from the small rural town of Mount Vincent, NSW, who served in the First World War. The names have been hand-embroidered onto the flag.

It is not known when this memorial was established or unveiled; however, fundraising for the project had begun by April 1923. According to The Newcastle Sun, 26 April 1923, the plan was for an "Australian Ensign ... to be purchased, and the names of all who left the district to go to the Great War [were] to be put upon it."

The flag was at some stage installed within the local Anglican church, known as Christ Church Mount Vincent. As of 19 January 2021, the flag is in Sydney undergoing restoration. An appointment with the church is required to view the memorial.
