Ganmain Public School First World War Roll of Honour Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a polished timber Roll of Honour, with a classical pediment at the top and carved columns on either side. Below the pediment is a supporting shelf with a similar shelf positioned at the bottom of the board. The central panel features the names of those who served, neatly printed in gold. Elegant gold line and scrollwork add a decorative element to the piece. Planning for the memorial was underway by mid-1919, as reference to a meeting of the school's Parents and Citizens' Association published in the Australian Town and Country Journal on 18 June. At the meeting it was decided to obtain an honour roll, to be funded through public subscription. The Coolamon-Ganmain Farmers' Review, 22 April 1921stated that on Monday next, Anzac Day will be celebrated at the Public School by the unveiling of the school's Honor Roll. The newspaper also stated that at a meeting of the Parents and Citizens' Association held on Wednesday 20 April, arrangements for the ceremony were discussed. A detailed description of the occasion was published in the Coolamon-Ganmain Farmers' Review, 29 April 1921. The school-room, decorated with the flags of the Allies, was packed with children and parents while the memorial was covered by the Union Jack and Commonwealth flags. The proceedings began at 11.30 a.m. and Mr J. B Arnold, President of the P. and C. Association, was chairman. Other officials were Rev. W.B. Davies and Mr Lhards, a returned soldier. Mr J.B. Arnold spoke and then unveiled the Roll of Honour. The children sang 'Rule Britanica' followed by Reverend Davies. The children then sang 'Australia Fair' followed by speeches from returned servicemen Mr Lhards, Mr Simpson and Mr McAuliffe. Reverend Davies engaged in prayer; two minutes silence was held and the National Anthem was sung. The occasion concluded with a picnic held on the Recreation Ground.
