Description / Background

This stately war memorial is a photographic honour roll for the First World War. It is made of timber, demonstrating a high-level of execution and finish. The piece features four turned columns, with decorative capitals. A carved laurel wreath adorns the top of the board and two smaller carvings of shields are positioned towards the bottom.

The centre panel of the board contains the names of 34 members of the Loyal Lockhart Lodge of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows (M.U.I.O.O.F.) who served in the war. Each name is accompanied by a black and white photograph of the man, mostly taken while in uniform. The photos are protected by a pane of glass.

The roll was designed and made by Grace Bros. of Sydney. It was unveiled at the Lockhart School of Arts on 19 November 1919. The ceremony was reported in The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser on 26 November. The Grand Master, Mr Perkins, performed the unveiling and the formalities were followed by a supper, music, and dancing. After the unveiling, the roll was to be moved to its permanent home in the Shire Hall.

At some later stage, the memorial was returned to the School of Arts, now known as Lockhart Memorial Hall. Access to view it is by appointment/tour. Also on site is the Lockhart and District Great War Honor Roll. The names on the Lodge roll also appear on the district roll.
