Description / Background

The Millthorpe Methodist Church First World War Honor Roll consists of two polished timber boards that are identical in design. Each board has a classical carved pediment, which incorporates a shelf at the top and the bottom. The shelves are connected by turned columns, topped with Ionic capitals. Within each pediment is a decorative gold painted wreath, with the Union Jack and Australian flags painted in the centre of each wreath.

The two rolls list the names of 29 members of the church congregation who served in the First World War. Their names are printed in gold drop shadow lettering, with stars beside the names of 10 veterans who were killed and crosses beside the names of 13 veterans who were wounded. Both rolls are decorated with a gold painted rope draped around the veteran names.

The Leader (Orange), 11 August 1916, reported the local Millthorpe Methodist Church had arranged to have an honour roll made containing the names of all those from the church who had enlisted for service at the front. This first honour roll, which lists 14 veterans, was unveiled at the Millthorpe Methodist Church on 10 September 1916 by Mr Thomas Warburton. The service was conducted in front of a large congregation by the Reverend W T Dyer, assisted by Mr Marion, general secretary of the Temperance Alliance (The Leader (Orange), 13 September 1916).

The second roll was presented to the Church by Mrs J C Nicol. The new memorial was made to match the first and was to be erected as a memorial to Corporal Lancelot D Nicol of the 14th Field Artillery Brigade, the eldest son of Mrs Nicol, who was killed in action in Belgium on 24 October 1917. This roll, which lists 15 veterans, was unveiled by Mrs Nicol at the Church on 9 June 1918, with the service conducted by Reverend P O Davis in front of a very large congregation (The Leader (Orange), 19 November 1917; 18 February 1918; 12 June 1918).

The Millthorpe Methodist Church became the Uniting Church and later the Millthorpe Village Church.

The honour rolls are available for viewing when the Village Church is open for services.
