Description / Background

This memorial consists of a water bore which was made to supply the settlement of North Star with water and a memorial park which features a gate bearing two plaques. The bore is dedicated to those who served in the Second World War whilst the park features an honour roll commemorating all those that served from the area.

The Warialda Standard and Northern Districts' Advertiser reported on 12 November 1951 that a public meeting had been held at North Star to consider the establishment of a memorial in memory of the men from the North Star area who fell in battle during the Second World War. It was decided that the memorial should take the form of a small park on which a sub-artesian bore would be sunk to ensure the growth of trees and to act as an auxiliary water supply for the town.

A local resident, Mrs R. Doolin, donated two blocks of land for the project and a committee of ten was formed to raise the necessary finance. Two social functions were planned to help raise funds for the project: a harvest ball on 16 November and a day's sport and pigeon shoot on 15 December.

The Warialda Standard described the opening of the War Memorial gates in detail. The memorial was officially opened on 3 May 1954. Mr Geoff Crawford MLA and Reverend D.K. McLennan of Goodwindi performed the dedication service. The memorial took the form of a pair of gates leading into the park; two pillars with attached plaques and the water bore scheme. The cost of the memorial was 2,000 pounds. Mr W. Makim (Committee President) and Mr Ron Logan (Secretary) welcomed the visitors. Others to attend were Councillor Pyrke (President of Yallaroi Shire Council) and representatives of Goondwindi, Yetman and Warialda R.S.L. sub-branches. In conclusion, the newspaper report published the names of the fallen and the theatres of war in which they fell.
