Description / Background

This wooden memorial board is 24 inches wide and 36 inches tall. Painted in gold are 40 names of residents in Exeter and the surrounding area who enlisted during the First World War.

Five of the veterans listed died while on service. One of the veterans, Corporal Norman Henry Crank, was inadvertently missed from the listing and not marked with a Maltese Cross.

Two of the veterans listed could not be traced or identified as from the Exeter or surrounding area on the AIF and the NAA databases. For more information, view the individual veteran listings by clicking View on the veteran table.

In 1902 the Exeter community built the Village Hall, and it opened on 19th December 1902. It can be found across the road from the historical St Aidan’s Church built in 1895.

In April 1942, the army requisitioned the hall and surrounding area until late July. The 52nd Division Ordnance Corps used the hall and area for workshops and recovery depot.

Outside the Community Hall in the car park, you will find the Exeter War Memorial, listing the names of First World War veterans who died during the conflict.
