Description / Background

The war memorial fountain is dedicated to the 'place of farewell' for First World War soldiers; commissioned and erected by the women of New South Wales, under the auspices of the Centre for Soldiers' Wives and Mothers.

The memorial consists of a Pyrmont sandstone wall, with an enclosed trachyte plaque, inscribed with gold lettering. A bronze drinking fountain is attached to the front of the wall, accompanied by a circular bronze plaque containing a decorative design of a rosemary sprig. An eternal flame made of brass and glass has been added to the top of the wall. The memorial design was created by returned soldier, Mr C Greenwell, of the architect firm Budden and Greenwell.

The memorial was dedicated in 1921 by the Archbishop of Sydney, in the presence of their Excellencies the Governor General and Lady Forster, Dame Margaret Davidson, president of the Memorial Fund together with a large congregation. The memorial fountain was unveiled by the Governor General of Australia, Lord Henry Forster, on Anzac Day, 25 April, 1922.

In 1988, the memorial was moved from its original position 30 metres east of the Sydney Fleet Base. It is now located on the wharf-side of Cowper Wharf Road, near the intersection with Wylde Street, heading to the Naval Base.
