Description / Background

Note: This war memorial is not currently accessible by the public.

This listing describes pieces of stonework from the First World War memorial gates that were originally erected at the former St Thomas' Church of England in East Greta.

The gates featured two pillars of Ravensfield sandstone, acting as the gate posts. The pillars were inscribed with fine v-cut lettering that included an honour roll listing members of the church community who served in the war. The pillars were decorated with Gothic-arch cruciform tops.

The gates were officially dedicated in April 1921 at a large commemorative service. At the time of the ceremony, the gates were accompanied by an iron fence.

The stones were discovered by a local resident and donated to Maitland City Council for potential restoration and re-use.
