Description / Background

The memorial is made of brass and mounted on a wooden base, measuring approximately 20 inches wide and 30 inches tall. It is attached to the eastern wall of St Aidan’s Anglican Church, Exeter.

Its brass plaque is engraved with black and red lettering, listing the names of 27 parishioners who signed up for service in the First World War. Five are marked as having died while on service. For more information on each veteran, please see their respective veteran pages.

St Aidan’s Anglican Church was styled on the ancient Celtic churches of old Scotland with a semi-circular eastern window portraying the Good Samaritan. It was opened for services in July 1895 and dedicated on 11 January 1896.
