Description / Background

Two war memorials to the fallen were installed in St Margaret's Anglican Church in Bellingen, NSW, in the years following the Second World War: a wrought iron bell and an honour roll plaque.

The bell was the first memorial on site, arriving in late 1948. On 11 November, The Daily Examiner stated it was "a finely wrought bell selected for both its beautiful tone and large size."

The unveiling ceremony for the roll took place at the church several years later. During the service on 4 May 1952, Reverend L. R. Crossman spoke of "the great cost in human life Australia made to the Allied victory" (The Daily Examiner, 7 May 1952).

The roll is a simple bronze plaque, decorated with a small Latin cross. It lists the names of 10 members of the St Margaret's congregation who died in the war. It is located on the front eastern wall of the church, beneath the crossed Australian and British flags. It is positioned alongside other war memorials.
